Words to stimulate the mind.
Mark Borthwick: Synthetic Voices by Olivier Zahm and Jeff Rian (ART DATA)  "We were able to taste each other's breath without even touching." scribbles NY photographer Mark Borthwick. This book makes commonalities sexy - floorboard sprints in white panties and an ironing board, or perching on the boudoir dresser in turquoise eveningwear. This is his version of domestic athletics in serious blues. And if you thought bowl cuts weren't cool, Chloe Sevigny says now you do.

Ecstasies of the Earth

JANE

Visual prayer with Heath Wae  To nestle yourself into one of Heath Wae’s artworks is to be bathed in a tender, earthy light force. A symphony of mineral-rich pigments emanates from the canvas as if capturing the essence of sunlight warming the land. A flock of colours plucked from native surroundings—ochre, terracotta, clay, and even a touch of sage swirl in a meditative delight. Using a paint medium quite literally foraged from the rivers, forests, and sky, Heath collects natural specimens of stone, crystal, and mineral sediment on his wanderings that he then grinds and crushes into a paste to smear over one another in a spectral embrace. A process that he refers to as ‘non-painting’, it is here where the elements take over. Tuning into the essence of his paint palette, harnessing the colour and powers of the natural pigments, he allows the elements to guide his brushstrokes, as his hands become a conduit for their energies, moving as if in a shamanic trance to the rhythms of the earth.

Activist Mānuka’s Gabrielle Mirkin on the power of edible beauty

HARPER’S BAZAAR AUSTRALIA

There’s a new Queen Bee in town.

IN THE EARLY 2000s, the concept of clean beauty meant foraging paper bags of herbal powders, strange-smelling roots and jars overflowing with sticky liquids from your nearest health food store and then proceeding to make a total mess as you dripped these D.I.Y. concoctions from the kitchen to the bathroom.

For those who had clued on early to the dark side of what was a chemically reliant beauty industry, natural priming rituals were a far cry from insta-cool and laborious, to say the least. If you were lucky to purchase a bottle of something pre-made, labels were musty and dotted with encrypted instructions that read something like a sermon.

Take the prized Mānuka honey for example: a rare golden elixir that originates from the lush green isle of Aotearoa New Zealand. Beloved worldwide for its unique medicinal bounty, this edible ingredient was commonly found on supermarket shelves with no labelling education as to its source and graded potency. Given these were the dark ages when it came to brand transparency, this precious resource was (and to an extent still is) shipped out from its homeland by large international companies who dilute and mass distribute to chain stores with no regard for New Zealand regulations (authentic Mānuka honey is graded and scientifically tested for its potency). For Kiwi natives, Gabrielle Mirkin and husband Luke Harwood, it was an awakening to this untold truth after returning to their motherland from New York, that seeded their idea to launch a small batch honey brand built on 100 per cent Grade A raw Mānuka.

We Indulge In Wrap-top Pleasures

THE ICONIC EDITION

Let’s get entangled.

No button, zip or snap can match the seductive power of a tied bow. Once a detail resigned only to prima ballerinas now a casual-luxury of streetwear. Whether it is a decorative knot or a waist-cinching do-up, we’re craving high- shine, ribbon-esque silhouettes to wrap us like the most perfect gift. Given our modern taste for trousers, we’re opting for the classic wrap top to give a little gloss to our daytime line-up.

Where the 70s jersey wrap dress is empowering thanks to its versatile nature, the wrap top is a younger more sophisticated statement. Empowerment should be a given to all feminine creatures so now let’s work on feeling deserving of life’s most richest pleasures. Starting with soft, slinky textures (silk everything). These fabrics may be seemingly high-maintenance and saved for only the most high-brow occasions but by adding this new elegance to your daytime rotation you will be floating through those traffic honks and city sputters like a swan.

Vanishing Act

RUSSH

If there was ever a time to make use of your Céline pool slides, it is now.

You can go to Paris for a lot of things — romance, art, fashion (darling), crème brûlées — but let's face it, unless you've got the Tour de France on your wish list, fitness doesn't rank as high priority when you've got the Champs-Elysées in your eyes. "The French don't do anything besides smoking and making love,” as one Parisian native (our very own cover girl) Marie Piovesen so smugly put it.

Au contraire mon ami, the times they are changing. Out with the greenhouse gases, in with a health revolution that starts with a bio-bagel from Bob's Kitchen on Rue des Gravilliers and ends in the Mandarin Oriental's 24-hour fitness centre and herbal steam room.

Portrait  – Georgia O’Keeffe

THE EVERYWOMAN MAGAZINE

The myth, the legend.

Perhaps one of the most influential artists of our time. She made mountains, lakes and flowers subject matter when no man took them seriously as modern compositions. Deeper than that she was a pioneer in translating a female sense of self into visual form when the world was highly filtered through a male lens.

First, she took New York then New Mexico. Despite her straight shooting reputation as the woman in black, Georgia loved colour. “I paint because colour is a significant language to me.” She once said. It has to be noted that at the time her vibrant aural pieces like Music - Pink and Blue No. 2 were being released, bright colour was not in fashion and floral subjects were snuffed as trivial women’s business. Ironically, one said flower painting by Georgia, Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 broke the record in 2014 for the most expensive painting ever sold by a woman painter at $44.4 million. Trivial nonetheless.

Places we go when there is nowhere left to run.

The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac (Penguin Modern Classics)
This ancient text is about to become the still point of your turning world. It tastes just like beat poets on a spiritual quest: first sip joy, second gladness, third serenity, then madness and ecstasy. Let Kerouac’s golden eternities flow through your meridians, piercing in all the right places. Zen in a time of San Fran bohemia.

Living the American Dream

THE ICONIC EDITION

Gonzo style notes from the desk of Hunter S. Thompson.

Wild days at the desk with Hunter S. Thompson’s witty enlightenments. Nearly 50 years since his cult book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was published and we’re still loving his American dream. Style checklist from the writer (for whom it never got weird enough) includes a mishmash of outdoorsy safari jackets, golfing polos, visors, military shorts and the omnipresent Converse All-Stars. Twelve breathtaking stays in Tasmania for your next trip

HARPER’S BAZAAR AUSTRALIA

From hiking to A-grade coffee and produce, whatever calls you to Tasmania — you’ll be well taken care of at these
luxury (dare we say indulgent) stays.

Whether or not you classify yourself as the outdoorsy type, the untamed beauty of Tasmania seduces even the most delicate of souls. A vast sprawling terrain roughly the size of Scotland yet home to only a sliver of our country’s population. A rare and enchanting blimp on the map, that although inhabited, this land remains remarkably unconquered. It’s enriched with brooding greens and greys, ancient forests and mystical lakes hidden high in the clouds.

The air is crisp, the water pristine and the soil fertile. With a formula so fresh, it is easy to see why the cuisine alone lures visitors to its shores. The degustation menu of rustic (yet polished) lodges and unique nature stays on offer is enough to satiate both the bougie and the brave. From hiking to A-grade coffee, whatever calls you to the great southern tip of Australia — you’ll be well taken care of at these luxury (dare we say indulgent) accommodations.

Revamped And Romanced: 16 Satin Dresses We Love

THE ICONIC EDITION

Call your girlfriends. A new kind of mood is rising.

Stolen from the boudoir and taken out on the town. This is sumptuous satin, let free after dark. There’s nothing sneaker-ish about the way we want to wear this desirous shiny fabric. The tone is dark, sultry — hedonistic even. Lights are dimmed. Candles burn. Hips swerve in rhythm. Martinis courtesy of a stranger. Remember those parts of yourself you forgot in lockdown. Unleash. Dust off the metallic party pumps. Suddenly, the body-con slip tempts you once again — this time ruched with satin draping. Subversive cut-outs and sheer fabrics peek out under evening blazers. Jackets slightly oversized with cues from black-tie (it’s as if it were borrowed from a gentleman). Flashes of encrusted signet rings and crystal cocktail earrings dangling in the club light. Lashings of lace glimpsed under a trench. Silk sets that glitter like sapphires and emeralds — purposely unbuttoned in just the right places to show off gold chains resting delicately on the collarbone. Obviously, darling, the slip dress returns — it’s like that ex- lover you just can’t give up. Rehashed. Revamped. Romanced. Basically, we’re musing Kim Kardashian post Kanye break up.
